Rainbow Egg Layers

Everyday is Easter on our farm. We love walking out to the chickens with our egg basket and peeking in the nest box to see what color eggs we got that day. We tend to get a mix of olive, green, blue, and differnt hues of brown. We have been working on our egg laying program for 6 years and have loved all the breeds we have brought into the mix to get our colored egg basket.

What are rainbow Egg Laying Chickens?

Rainbow egg-laying chickens typically refer to a mixed flock of chickens that lay eggs of various colors. These flocks are often created by combining breeds known for producing eggs in different shades, creating a visually diverse array of eggs. We have worked hard with breeders from around the country to get in genetics that are supperior to Hatchery colors.

Here are some common breeds known for laying eggs in various colors, contributing to the "rainbow" effect:

1. Araucana/Ameraucana: These breeds lay blue eggs. We cull any hen that lays green as this is outside the breed standard.
2. Welsummer:Known for laying dark brown eggs.
3. **Marans:** Famous for their dark chocolate-brown eggs.
4. Easter Egger:A hybrid or mixed breed that can lay eggs in various colors, including blue, green, and pink.
5. Moss Egger. Shades of dark green.
6. Marans: We work hard to bring in very dark brown laying genetics.

By selecting and raising chickens from these breeds, or others known for unique egg colors, you can create a flock that lays eggs in a range of colors, resembling a "rainbow." Keep in mind that while egg color is often associated with specific breeds, individual variations can occur.

Every spring we hatch out our replacements for our own flock and then quickly start to hatch out chicks for our customers. We have recently changed the chicken breeds we are raising, so be sure to take a look below at what’s available this year. We are taking a break from hatching for 2024.

When you have decided on which breeds to add to your flock please send us an email with how many of each you would like. We are putting a max of 5 per breed, but if you are looking for more I can add you back on to the end of the list for more chicks in a future hatch. We sell the chicks as a straight run (we do not sex our chicks).

*Don’t want roosters? We are currently offering a cockerel (young rooster) buy back program. If you can bring your extra roosters to us on a processing day (they need to come in a box you can leave so we can maintain bio-security of our own flock), we will buy back any rooster of ours you raise up. We will pay $3 a piece. Processing days will occur one at the end of summer and once in the fall.

Dates of hatches:
No hatches for 2024

Olive Eggers are an exciting breed of chickens that typically lay various shades of olive colored eggs. They are created by crossing a dark brown egg layer with a blue egg layer. We use a variety of parent breeds to create several strains of Olive Eggers. Our rooster is a Cuckoo Maran and our hens are: Easter Eggers, Black Ameraucanas, or an F1 Olive Egger. Our F1 generation hybrids do typically lay an olive colored egg, however, the olive can be in various shades and the potential does exist to lay eggs of different colors such as tinted, brown, etc.

The Ameraucana is an American domestic breed of chicken developed in the United States in the 1970″s. It derives from Araucana chickens brought from Chile. Ameraucana Chickens are not to be confused with Easter Eggers, as they are a pure breed and also not to be confused with Araucanas, which are rumpless and have tufts.

Ameraucanas always have both beards/muffs. Their pea comb makes them a great bird for colder climates. The breed’s most desirable features are their slate or black legs and the fact that they lay blue-tinted eggs. They are bred to retain the blue-egg gene eggshell color and they have a quiet and calm personality. Average Mature Weight: Rooster 6½ lbs., Hens 5½ lbs.

Easter Egger chickens, which are often referred to incorrectly as Ameraucana chickens, are a mixed breed that is derived directly from the Araucana breed. Over the years, this particular type of chicken has grown in popularity due to the blue and green-tinted eggs that they produce and the excitement that goes along with such colors.

Easter Egger chickens are, in general, very friendly and active. Easter Egger chickens do well in many different climates but are particularly cold-weather hardy, allowing them to thrive in any season regardless of whether you choose to raise them in a free-range setting or a small coop. Additionally, no two Easter Egger chickens are identical in appearance.

As you can imagine, Easter Egger chickens are most attractive for their unique egg colors. The eggs that these chickens lay will typically be either blue or green, depending upon the bird, and are usually medium in size.
